For the municipality of Nižná Polianka, we produced a documentary film Bloody Mountain, which presents the dramatic events of the First World War battles in and around the municipality. The aim of the project was to create a visually compelling, historically grounded and authentic reconstruction of the events that took place at a site known as Bloody Mountain.
The film combines documentary narration, expert historical commentary and dramatised reconstructions of battle scenes. Preparation was based on working with historical materials, military archives and period sources to capture the atmosphere, equipment, arms and course of the battles as faithfully as possible. The creative process also involved cooperation with historians, who provided a vital expert contribution to the documentary film.
During production, we worked with a military history club that helped prepare period uniforms, weapons, props and battle scenes. For the filming, we created trenches in a field under winter conditions using heavy machinery to achieve the most authentic battle environment possible. Filming involved weapons, pyrotechnics, special effects, simulated explosions and other elements that enhanced the authenticity and dramatic impact of the reconstruction.
The film focuses on the tragic wartime events that affected the Nižná Polianka region and surrounding area during the First World War. It presents not only the course of the battles themselves, but also the broader historical context, the fates of the soldiers, the significance of the site and the memory of the landscape, which still bears traces of these events. The dramatised parts bring historical moments to life and allow viewers to experience more intensely the atmosphere of the front line, winter battles, uncertainty and human tragedy.
The result is a documentary film with a strong visual and reconstruction component, combining expert historical interpretation with cinematic treatment. The project was based on thorough preparation, work with archival materials, cooperation with experts and technically demanding production in outdoor conditions.
